How did Barnstead Open Farm Day start?
In 2011, two neighbors by the names of Robin Donovan and Don Walker began talking about ways they could encourage fellow Barnstead residents to become more self-sufficient. From that conversation, the idea of The Barnstead Farmers and Gardeners Network was formed.
The Barnstead Farmers and Gardeners Network (BFGN)
The BFGN was formed in 2012 and was comprised of Robin and Don, along with a number of interested local Barnstead farmers and volunteers. The mission of this all volunteer group was to encourage support for local, sustainable farming and gardening. They also wanted to promote local foods and markets.
The Beginnings of Open Farm Day
The best way to promote farms is to get folks interested in the farms themselves. In talking with the farmers, the idea of an annual event to bring attention to the farms was agreed upon. It was decided to call this event the Annual Barnstead Open Farm Day.
Open Farm Day allows the public to see how the Barnstead farms operate. It provides the opportunity for the visiting public to talk directly with the farmers, see what and how they produce their products, and lets them purchase these products directly from the farm- eliminating any middleman. That is a win for everyone.
The first Open Farm Day was promoted by word of mouth, a few Public Service Announcements in some local newspapers, on a newly created BFGN Facebook page, and putting up fliers at a number of businesses all around. And it was a huge success!
This year marks the 8th year of Barnstead’s Open Farm Day. Because of its success, we believe that is now well established as a local tradition, and one that continues to grow beyond the boundaries of our community.
Admission to the event is always free, and open to the public. Come spend the day with us!
